Tyler Edward Nakonechny, 27, Grand Forks, ND died on November 21, 2018.
Tyler was born January 27, 1991, moments before his twin brother Bryan, who was stillborn. Tyler was always a fighter, but never more than in the first months of his life. Weighing in at 2 lbs, 10 oz, he spent his first three months in the NICU before coming home. It was clear very early that he wasn’t hitting developmental milestones and he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when he was ten months old.
Tyler lived in Grand Forks his entire life. He attended Century Elementary and Red River High School. Following graduation he moved into an apartment with two friends, Nick and Seth, and received services from Development Homes Inc, the Anne Carlsen Center and most recently Grand Forks Growth and Support Center. Tyler grew up golfing with his dad and watching his sister Brenna play hockey. As he got older he enjoyed a good beer and a little night life. In the last couple years he enjoyed participating in 5K’s. His all-time favorite performer was Shania Twain. If you were on a drive with Ty, it was a 100% chance you were listening to a Shania CD.
Ty’s heart was as big as his smile. He listened patiently, usually, but he made it very clear when he was unhappy, bored or frustrated. He had an incredible sense of humor and a laugh that lit up a room. He was beloved by his family, friends, and the incredible people who cared for him. Even without words, he drew people to him and those who had the privilege of knowing him were better for it.
Tyler is survived by his sister Brenna (Justin) Bowland, of Grand Meadow, MN, his mother Mickie and his stepfather, Tom Mohs, of Wahpeton, ND. Grandparents Jim & Cathie Volk, Bismarck ND, and Nettie Nakonechny, Dauphin, MB. Aunts Karen (Terry) Hulm, Bismarck; Deb (Grant) Dunham, Grand Forks; Sue (Keith) Swanson, Grand Forks, Pat (Laurie) Nakonechny, Manitou, MB, Peggy (Bill) Zazulak, Brandon, MB and all his cousins. He was preceded in death by his father Perry, brother Bryan, and his grandfather Edward Nakonechny.
In lieu of gifts we ask that you make a donation to Development Homes, Inc or Grand Forks Growth and Support Center. Tyler’s life was made better by the many people who cared for him over the years and we would like to thank them for their selfless work and the love they gave him. They truly were his extended family and we are blessed to know them.
