Susan M. Kohl, 77 of Grand Forks, North Dakota passed away Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Valley Senior Living, Grand Forks, North Dakota. Susan previously resided at Parkwood Place.
Susan was born on August 28, 1946, the daughter of Walter and Alice (Rutter) McKinnon in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Susan was raised and educated in Grand Forks, graduating from St. James Catholic High School in 1964. She began working at Sears after her graduation. Suan was united in marriage to Lee Kohl in October of 1972. Through this union two daughters were born, Jennifer and Lisa. She continued her career at Sears until 1973. She became a stay-at-home mom after Jennifer was born. She began working at the Arc in 1983 and continued until 2000. Susan received many awards while working at the ARC including awards for her work with Headstart. After leaving the ARC, Susan then worked at Menards for a year. She started working at Hugo’s from 2001 until her retirement in 2017.
Susan enjoyed decorating birthday cakes for children and many others. She also enjoyed painting ceramics with her mother and Jennifer. Susan made homemade Christmas gifts for family. Susan baked for many family get-to-gethers and was known for her potato salad and spaghetti sauce. She loved spending time at the lake. Susan loved playing cards at Rutter’s cabin over the years with her cousins, relaxing at “The Hampton’s” with her siblings and fishing with her grandsons. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and attended many of their activities through the years. When all three grandchildren were younger, Susan enjoyed weeklong vacations with them, that included visits to Lake Bemidji, Stump Lake Park, and Sully’s Hill at Devils Lake. These vacations started or ended with trips to Chuck-E-Cheese or a local hotspot. She was “Grandma Susie” to many, including lake neighbors, neighbors, and Parker & Adam’s teammates over the years. Susan was a loyal UND Hockey Fan, attending many memorable Sioux games over the years. Susan was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church
Sue is survived by her daughters, Jennifer (John) Kohl-Fichtner of Thompson, ND; Lisa Coughlan of Apple Valley, MN; three grandchildren, Sydney Coughlan of Apple Valley, MN, Parker and Adam Fichtner both of Thompson, ND; siblings, Sally McKinnon of Grand Forks, ND, Patrick (Janice) McKinnon of Orlando, FL, Mary Jo Anderson of Fargo, ND, Pam (Don) Wostrel of Sauk Rapids, MN and Nancy (Dean) Ekren of Manvel, ND; numerous nieces and nephews.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Amundson Funeral Home. Memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Amundson Funeral Home.
