Steven W. Borgen, 66, of Grand Forks, passed away peacefully on January 1st, 2021. He was surrounded by his family at Altru Hospital, following a very brief illness.
Steve was born July 28th, 1954, the youngest of five children born to Russell and Joyce (Hogenson) Borgen. He graduated from Ulen-Hitterdal High School. He was active in FFA, was a member of NHS, and was a co-captain, with his twin brother, of the wrestling team. He enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Germany as a medic. He was honorably discharged, then attended Moorhead State University. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing.
On July 7th, 1979, Steve was united in marriage to the love of his life, Kathy Jacobson, at Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley. They made their home in Grand Forks and were blessed with two children.
Steve began his career managing Duling Optical. In later years, he became a district manager and eventually purchased two locations. Following the flood of 1997, Steve’s career transitioned into furniture sales. He retired from Conlin’s Furniture as the store manager.
Steve was a story teller, always happy to turn a stranger into a friend. He could often be found at an auction, a flea market, the street fair or out “antiqueing.” His witty sense of humor made him so lovable. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with family, whether at Turkey BBQ in Ulen, at family gatherings, holidays or on vacations.
Steve loved the outdoors. He often pulled to the side of the road to photograph great scenery or wildlife. Every year, he looked forward to deer hunting with several generations of family on his grandparents’ farmstead. He enjoyed fishing with his kids and grandsons and being taken on long walks by his dogs.
Steve is survived by his wife Kathy; daughter Brittany (Thomas) Tschida, West Fargo, ND; son Sean Borgen of Grand Forks, ND; sisters Brenda (Al) Winters, Story, WY; Marilyn (Rich) Oxley, White Bear Lake, MN; twin brother Scott Borgen, Ulen, MN; sister-in-law Lorie (Tim) Doran, Ulen, MN; brothers-in-law Carman Dahl, Gary, MN; Harlen (Elaine) Jacobson, Twin Valley, MN; sister-in-law Judy (Dale Clermont) Sites, Twin Valley, MN; grandsons Bennet and Caleb Tschida along with their brother, expected in April, and several nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Greg Borgen.
Due to COVID restrictions, a private family service will be held on Friday, January 8th, in Steven’s hometown, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Ulen, MN. Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks is handling some arrangements.
