Stanley Omer Hoistad departed this earthly life on July 7, 2020. At the time of his death, he was a resident of Woodside Village at Valley Senior Living on 42nd where he received excellent care.
He was born on June 14, 1926 in Lisbon, ND to Ole and Sophie Hoistad. He graduated from Enderlin High School in 1944 and attended Dakota Business College in Fargo, ND taking general business classes. After his military service in the Army, he completed his education at Concordia College and University of North Dakota where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He remained a staunch supporter of all those institutions for the rest of his life.
Stan married Dorothy Carson of Buxton, ND in 1951. He is survived by his wife and their four children, Mary Ziegler (Richard) of Fairfield Glade,TN, Susan Schumacher (Warren) of Portland, OR, Gregory Hoistad (Sheri) of Bloomington, MN and Peter Hoistad (Melanie) of Grand Forks, four grandchildren, Scott Ziegler (Cheryl Harrison), Anna Ziegler, Rachel Jones (Zach) and Alexandra Penny (Brett), two step-grandsons Todd Schumacher Emmons (Alyssa) and Kurt Schumacher (Liz) and eight greatgrandchildren. He was very proud of his children and pleased that they all attended college at UND.
Stanley was a valued partner of Brady Martz accounting firm for 35 years, retiring in 1984. During his career he served on the council of the American Institute of CPAs and the State Board of Directors of the North Dakota Society of CPAs ultimately serving as the President. He was awarded the 1983 Public Service Award by that society. Stan was inducted into the UND Accounting Hall of Fame in 2014. He was always an active volunteer serving on numerous community boards and holding leadership positions at Calvary Lutheran Church, the Lions Club and was named Elk of the Year in 1986.
Stan’s friendships and business associations were vast. He liked people and people liked him right back. He was a generous, go-the-extra-mile, my-word-is-my-bond kind of guy - a gentleman and a gentle man. He was a favorite friend to those who knew him and will be missed by all. He lived well and laughed often. We will smile and be grateful he was in our lives when we remember him. “Not bad for a kid from Enderlin”!
There will be no service at this time. Anyone wishing to make a gift in Stanley’s memory could consider the Stan and Dorothy Hoistad Accounting Scholarship at UND, the Grand Forks Senior Center or Valley Senior Living Foundation.
