Shelly Nygaard

Shelly Kay Nygaard, 57 Portland, North Dakota, died Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at Sanford Hospital on Broadway in Fargo, North Dakota.

Shelly was born March 25, 1966, the daughter of Kenneth and Violet (Nienas) Nygaard. She grew up in Grand Forks, graduating from Central High School in 1984. She moved to Portland, North Dakota in February of 1998 with her family.

Shelly was her parents’ primary caregiver, helping them with everything they needed. She also took care of her son Michael. Shelly was a talented artist with her drawings and paintings. She also liked to bake, do crossword puzzles, listen to her favorite country singers, and tend the flowers and tomato plants.

Shelly is survived by her son Michael, siblings: Sharon (Bill) Hoffman, Susie Ernest, Steven (Beverly) Nygaard, Sandy (Bill) Montgomery, Sheila (Chip) Cornell, and Silvan (Shari) Nygaard, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her nephew Steven Nygaard Jr.

Per Shelly’s wishes, a memorial visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks.
