Grand Forks

Robert “Bob” John Kulack, 84, Grand Forks, ND passed away peacefully on Friday, June 28th at Valley Senior Living.

Bob Kulack, son of John and Alice Kulack, was born August 21st, 1939, in St. Boniface, Manitoba. He grew up and attended school in St. Boniface, graduating from Nelson McIntyre Collegiate in 1957.

On April 25th, 1964, he married the love of his life, Edythe Lynn Stewart. That summer the couple moved to Grand Forks to attend the University of North Dakota. This is where they made their home and raised their three children, Mark, Chris and Katie-Lynn.

In 1969, he graduated from UND with a degree in Education and began his teaching and coaching career at Schroeder Jr. High School. He accepted an Associate Principal position there in 1993 and two years later he became an Associate Principal at Red River High School, where he worked until his retirement in 2007. During his tenure at Schroeder, he would earn Masters and Specialists Degrees at UND. In addition to his career in the Grand Forks Public Schools, he spent many years teaching at Park College, (GFAFB) and various courses at UND.

Throughout his career, Bob was a member of various geography organizations and was involved in several community endeavors including serving as commissioner of men’s city league basketball and chief operating officer of the annual Grand Forks Grand AM Basketball Tournament. As a geographer, he was afforded the opportunity to travel to Sweden, Poland, and the former Soviet Union. He organized field trips for students to various places in Manitoba, Minnesota and North Dakota and helped facilitate the Awano Japan Sister City Program. In addition to the numerous awards and achievements received throughout his career, Bob was a two-time recipient of the National Geographer of the Year Award.

Bob was a proud husband, father and grandfather who did everything for his family. He was dedicated to his students and respected by his colleagues. Everyone loved “Mr. Kulack”. He loved to travel, especially to his family cottage at Victoria Beach, Manitoba and with his wife on weekend drives in Minnesota. Sports were a lifelong love of his. Bob played baseball, basketball and football in his youth, but loved hockey the most, with his greatest thrill being in attendance for Canada’s gold medal victory at the 2004-2005 World Junior Championships in Grand Forks. His love of music was something he shared with his family. Jazz, Motown, oldies and classic rock were his favorites. Bob and Lynn were devoted members of University Lutheran Church, enjoying the fellowship and serving the Wednesday night worship. They loved watching their grandchildren grow, sharing laughs with family and friends and relaxing together in their comfy chairs. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, former students and colleagues.

Bob is survived by his sons Mark and Chris (Tara), his daughter Katie and his three grandchildren, Jett, Charli and Jace.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lynn, his parents, John and Alice Kulack, his in-laws, William and Marion Stewart and his aunt Sophie Kaychuk.
