Robert Duane Iverson, 80, died November 18, 2020 at Altru Hospital due to complications from COVID-19. Robert was born August 28, 1940, the fifth child of Franz and Irene (Haugen) Iverson, in Grand Forks, ND. Bob was a man who loved his God, his family, and his country.
At the age of 15, he joined the North Dakota National Guard. He transferred to the US Marine Corps at age 17 and served in the Vietnam War. During his exceptional military career, he held many duties including drill instructor, recruiter, and motor transport officer. Robert worked his way up the military ladder and was commissioned as an officer in 1973. His military career spanned 28 years, and he retired in 1984 with the rank of Major. His family fondly referred to him as “Major Dad.”
After retiring from the military, he attended UND through benefits from the GI Bill. He graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor degree in Social Work. Bob spent 8 years at Red Willow Bible Camp as the maintenance director. As his final career, he started his own company called Ivers Consultants and inspected buses throughout the region. In his free time, he began building his lake cabin.
In 1959, he met and wed the love of his life, Avis Gulbranson, just 19 days after their first blind date and thus began a great love affair. He was 18 and she was 19. They were married July 17, 1959 and celebrated 61+ years together. Moving 18 times in his 28-year military career, Avis was Bob’s rock. Making a home in many new places and keeping him grounded and loved through all the ups and downs of life.
