Richard "Dick" Hatt

October 2, 1935 — January 6, 2019

Richard “Dick” Edward Hatt, 83 of Manvel, ND passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Altru hospital, with his family by his side. Dick was born on October 2, 1935 to Clarence Hatt & Mary (Bushaw) Hatt in Grand Forks, ND.

At three weeks old, Dick contracted whooping cough. He was then taken in and raised by his grandparents, Katie & Henry Bushaw. Dick spent his growing up years under Katie & Henry’s watchful eye. He attended Manvel Public School and graduated in May of 1953.

Dick’s grandfather Henry was a construction superintendent. At the age of 14, Dick joined grandpa Henry for summer work in construction. Dick fondly remembered his grandpa picking him up on the last day of school each year to hit the road and start the summer projects.

Dick thanked God for his grandfather keeping him on the path of construction, where at the age of 19 he met the love of his life, Donna Sutherland, while working on a highway project in International Falls, MN. Dick and Donna were married on July 6, 1957 and together raised four children: Henry, Michelle, Rob, and Russ.

Dick worked for Pillsbury in Grand Forks for 30 years. Upon the closing of Pillsbury, he worked as a local car salesman.

Dick’s favorite hobbies were fishing at Lake of the Woods with his children and grandchildren, hunting with his sons and grandsons, playing cards with his buddies, and most of all, spending time with his family. Over the years, Dick was an active member of the Manvel community; Dick was town cop, Mayor, School Board member, Senior Citizens Center Board Member, and longtime member of St. Timothy’s Catholic Church.

Dick is survived by his dear wife of 61 years, Donna (Sutherland) Hatt, and four children of Manvel, ND: Henry (Cathy) Hatt, Michelle (Lee) Stadstad, Robert Hatt, and Russ (Jenny) Hatt.  He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Katie (Nathan) Rokke, Krissy (Jake) Marto, Jared (Lachen) Stadstad, Aaron (Atalia) Hatt, Justin Stadstad, Riley and Sophie Hatt; two great-grandsons, Jase and Jett Stadstad; and one special niece, Carolyn (Tim) Curtin.

Dick is preceded in death by his son Harry, grandparents Henry & Katie Bushaw, parents Mary Bushaw and Clarence Hatt, siblings Jon Hatt and Joan Bauer, and grandson Jason Stadstad.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 12 at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Manvel, ND with visitation beginning at 9:30am and Mass at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the Jason Stadstad Arena in Dick’s name.
