Quayne “Mischief” Sherwood died suddenly Sunday, January 24, 2021 in Altru Hospital with family at her side.
Mischief was born March 6, 1930 in Valley City, ND to Kenneth and Blanche Simenson. She was a cherished only child. Her father’s employment meant the family moved frequently during her childhood living in Valley City, ND, Portal ND, Hankinson, ND, and a few towns in Kansas. She graduated from high school in 1948 , in Portal, ND. She attended the University of North Dakota, making many life-long friends, and graduating in 1952 with a degree in Medical Technology.
At UND, she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and while attending a fraternity party met her future husband, Ken Sherwood. The two were married in November 1952 at First United Methodist Church in Grand Forks. The young couple lived at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Kansas City, Northome, MN, and Warren, MN. During these moves Mischief was busy raising 4 children and working at various hospitals or laboratories.
The family moved to Grand Forks in 1967 when the new high school, Red River, was opened. Mischief continued her employment working at the Grand Forks Clinic. Mischief’s main job was her family. She attended every musical performance or concert of her children and later grandchildren. She supported everything that they did.
She was an active member of Zion United Methodist Church, Thursday Music Club, Entre Nous, and a variety of different book clubs. Her friends meant a great deal to her.
Mischief was fortunate to have married her soulmate. She and Ken have an exceptionally close family and their children are always there for each other when needed.
Mischief is survived by her husband of 68 years, Ken, 4 children, Connie, Grand Forks, Scott (Julie), Fargo, Brad (Jocelyn), Grand Forks, and Gail, Rapid City, SD, 4 grandchildren, Erin Sherwood (Justin Granberg), Fargo, Dylan Sherwood (Chelsa), Moorhead, MN, Ian Sherwood(Anna Tandberg) Fargo, Cole Sherwood (McKinley Solberg) West Fargo, and 2 great grandchildren, Brennah and Jayde Sherwood, Moorhead.
Mischief was good-natured, a gracious hostess, loved new technology and decorated for every holiday. She was an avid seamstress and a great golfer before her knees gave out. She taught her family to be adventurous, how to make people feel welcome in your home and to never turn down an opportunity to try something new, no matter your age. She loved to travel, and documented her life with her passion for photography. We remember her skiing for the first time at about age 75, and dancing on a table at the Walhalla Inn because she was invited to. She closed every conversation, phone call and letter with LYTP. Love you to pieces, mom! She will be missed by all who knew her.
A private family service will be held this week. A larger celebration of life may be held at a later date. The family is grateful to 911, and Altru Hospital for their support. Memorials will go to the Sherwood Music Scholarship fund in the Grand Forks Public Schools.
