Phyllis Marian Wahl Baukol, 94, formerly of Bemidji, passed away at Valley Senior Living on Columbia in Grand Forks, ND, from COVID 19 and Alzheimers on Saturday, October 24, 2020.
Phyllis was born in Jamestown, ND, on Feb. 16, 1926, to Harold and Mamie B. Howe Wahl. Her earlier years were spent in Bismarck until the family relocated to Grand Forks, where she graduated from Central High School, then the University of North Dakota in 1946. She was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority and met her future husband, Kay M. Baukol, at UND. They married August 16, 1947, in United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. For the next 40 years they made a loving home for their five children in Grand Forks where Kay was a partner in Baukol Builders, a commercial building construction company. Upon retirement in 1989 they eagerly moved to Bemidji, MN, to enjoy life at the lake. Kay passed away June 18, 1993 in Bemidji. On September 12, 2002, Phyllis married Dr. Gerald O. Sveen of Bottineau, ND, at Olivet Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND. They shared many good years together enjoying the company of friends and family in Bemidji.
From her early years, Phyllis was an accomplished pianist. Music always played a major role throughout her life. She taught piano lessons, sang in her church choir, played with the Grand Forks Symphony and sang in the Bemidji Chorale. She enjoyed golf, tennis swimming and bridge. She was a member of PEO, served on the Board of Directors at United Hospital in Grand Forks and was President of the Congregation at First Lutheran Church in Bemidji.
She will be greatly missed by all of her surviving family members: Spouse - Gerald O. Sveen, Bemidji, MN; Sister - Yvonne J. Palmer, Pelican Rapids, MN; Children – Bonnie Kay Jermundson, Canton, GA; Susan Lee Wright, El Dorado Hills, CA; Gaines Mitchell (Mitch) Baukol (Jane), Bemidji, MN; Jan Beth Wysocki (Clarion), Grand Forks, ND; Phillip Anders Baukol (Srey), Rochester, MN; 16 Grandchildren; 10 Great Grandchildren
A private family gathering will be held in the future.
