Norma C. Swingen, 91, Bemidji, MN and Grand Forks, ND, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at home with her loving husband Walter at her side on the north shore of Lake Bemidji.
Norma Claire Locklin was born January 29, 1932 in Grand Forks, the daughter of Clarence and Pearl (Davidson) Locklin. She was raised in Grand Forks and graduated from Central High School. Norma furthered her education and earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority.
Norma married her high school sweetheart, Walter Swingen on May 31th 1953 at Grand Forks. They started their young lives together in Japan while Walter was serving in the U.S. Air Force, and returned to Grand Forks upon his honorable discharge.
Norma spent the next number of years raising her family. Many lovingly called her “Pudgie” her childhood nickname. They enjoyed family time at Lake Bemidji, MN. Norma was an avid reader up until the time of her passing. She also enjoyed skiing, tennis, golf, horses and gardening, She adored her puppies.
Norma is survived by her husband, Walter; her children, Erin (Cliff) Dodd, Scottsdale AZ, Dan (Heidi) Swingen, Grand Forks, Anthony Swingen, Bemidji,; grandchildren, Ryan Dunphy, Scottsdale, Haley Dunphy, Scottsdale, Cole Miles, Scottsdale, Nicholas (Jess) Swingen, Grand Forks, Michael Swingen Boulder CO, Brooke (Tylden) Kossan Grand Forks; great grandchildren, Madalynn Reyes and Lilyan Reyes, Scottsdale, Elizabeth Swingen, Grand Forks, Collette Kossan and Riese Kossan, Grand Forks.
She was preceded in death by her Parents, Pearl Locklin, Clarence (Lock) Locklin, Sisters Joyce Arnason and Betty Hanson, and Son Lonnie.
Memorials are suggested to: University of North Dakota Alumni Association, Calvary Lutheran Church and St. Joseph’s Indian School, Chamberlin, SD
Memorial services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. The family will lay her to rest in Memorial Cemetery of Grand Forks.
