Norma Svoboda

Grand Forks, North Dakota

Norma Svoboda, resident of Valley Senior Living in Grand Forks, and formerly of Johnstown and Mayville, ND died on March 4, 2025 at Altru Hospital. Norma Henrietta Monk was born on March 21, 1928, on the family farm near Heaton, North Dakota to Henry and Katharine Monk. She graduated from Valley City State University and taught elementary school for many years in the Midway School District, Inkster, North Dakota. She received her Master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado and concluded her teaching career as a Professor at Mayville State University, Mayville, North Dakota, teaching in the Education Department. Norma married Laurence Svoboda in 1953.

Survivors include her son, Pat Svoboda (Margo) of Grand Forks, ND and Nancy Walters of Bloomington, MN, grandchildren - Ryan Svoboda, Katie Mersinger (JD), Nick Walters (Theresa), Mac Walters (Heidi) and Molly Ancel and 11 great grandchildren. 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Laurence, her parents, Henry and Katharine Monk; brother Marcus Monk; sisters Carol Monk and Geraldine Shea; brother-in-law Paul Shea, and son-in-law Dan Walters. 

Interment will be at the Gilby Cemetery. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to Gilby Rescue Squad or Valley Senior Living Foundation.
