Muriel Olson, formerly from Thompson, ND, passed away peacefully on February 25th, 2020 at Edgewood Vista Senior Care, East Grand Forks, MN.
Muriel Eleanor (Meland) Olson was born on October 27, 1926 in Pelican Rapids, MN, the daughter of Nils and Marie Meland. Muriel graduated from Bemidji High School on May 17, 1944. She earned a degree in business from Northern Business College on June 4, 1945. After graduation Muriel accepted a position as a secretary at the Pentagon in Washington DC. Muriel moved back to Minnesota in December 1945, and on June 21, 1947, she married Gordon E. Olson in Bemidji where they started their life together. Over the years they raised six children relocating to Grand Forks, ND, East Grand Forks, MN, Fargo and Thompson, ND.
Muriel was an active member of Walle Lutheran Church holding many offices and going above and beyond for her congregation. She held the position of American Legion Auxiliary President for several years and held many other community offices. She was also active in the General Federated Women’s Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nils and Marie Meland, husband, Gordon Olson, brothers, Wesley Meland, Don (Bud) Meland, sister, Helen (Arline) Kenney, and her daughter, Diane Majkrzak of Thompson in November 2019.
She leaves her loving children: David (Sue) Olson, Tracy, CA; Donn (Renee) Olson, Wyoming, MN; Debbie (Gary) Ofenloch, Salt Lake City, UT; Dale (Gayle) Olson, Roseville, CA; Darla (Alan) Berdal, Knoxville, TN; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to Edgewood Vista and the Altru Hospice team who filled her room with love and caring in her final days.
Muriel will be laid to rest on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at Walle Lutheran Church Cemetery. Due to COVID19 concerns and restrictions, a small private gathering has been requested by the family with masks and social distancing. No meal will follow. Please respect the family's wishes.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be given to Walle Lutheran Church.
