Milton Winger, 90, Grand Forks, N.D. died Friday, April 8, in Northwood Deaconess Health Center.
Milton was born August 28, 1931, in Mayville, ND, the son of Ernest & Ida (Master) Winger. He grew up in Mayville where he graduated from high school. He attended Mayville State University, the University of North Dakota and received his PhD from lowa State University.
Milton worked for the University of North Dakota as a mathematics professor from 1956 until his retirement in 1992.
He served 2 years in the US Army before his honorable discharge in 1955.
Milton married Marjorie Ann Root in Grand Forks on January 18, 1954. Together they made their home in Grand Forks raising 2 children, Pamela and Thomas.
Milton’s passion for music was a consistent thread thru-out his life. In college Milt led a dance band as the piano player. The band was called “The Lamplighters” and one of the female vocalists turned out to be his future bride, Marjorie Root.
The Winger family spent many summers travelling across the country as Milt continued his education at various universities. Their summer adventures took them to Las Cruces NM, Laramie Wyoming, Blacksburg VA, Columbia SC and Houghton, MI to name a few.
Lincoln Golf Course was a special place for Milt, Margie and their family. They enjoyed countless rounds of golf there as well as many area golf courses. Milt formed many lifelong friendships while enjoying the outdoors and good-natured competition.
The family grew to include daughter Pam’s husband, Kim and their son, Christopher. Milt & Marg enjoyed watching Chris play golf and hockey as well as his musical performances. Later on Milt enjoyed the addition of great-grandson, Henry Erickson.
Tom’s son, Austin also inherited his grandfather's love for music. They enjoyed attending many of his performances. Milt was pleased to see Austin’s educational career include achieving a PhD.
In keeping with his satisfaction in helping others Milt provided guidance and support to students and colleagues. Many of whom he assisted in their efforts to embark on a career during his four decades of teaching at UND.
Milton is survived by his children, Pamela (Kim) Erickson of Grand Forks, Tom (Barbara) Winger of Grand Forks; brother, Donley (Carol) Winger of San Luis Obispo, CA; grandchildren, Christopher Erickson and Austin Winger both of Grand Forks; great-grandson, Henry Erickson and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 58 years, Marjorie Ann.
Funeral Service with military honors: 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 15, 2022, at Amundson Funeral Home with visitation from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service.
Private interment at Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Forks.
