MILDRED GRACE WERT
Mildred Grace Wert, age 95 of Grafton formerly Grand Forks, died on Monday, February 18, 2019 in the Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton. A private service will be held at a later date.
Mildred Grace Wert was born September 24, 1923, to John and Margaret (Kustenborder) Bedker. She was raised on a farm near Jud, ND, and was the 6th of 7 children. Mildred graduated from Jud High School in 1941. She taught at a country schoolhouse for two years in rural ND. Teaching was not her calling. She joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served stateside for two years as a proud WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). After the Navy, she moved to Fargo, ND, where she met the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Wert. They were married on December 30, 1947, and moved to Grand Forks, ND. Family was her true calling. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an excellent cook and loved spending time with her grandchildren. Mildred worked at the University of North Dakota Bookstore for 19 years. When she and Dick retired in 1983, they spent many years wintering in Arizona with their son Todd and family until Dick’s death in 2003. Mildred enjoyed her summers at the lake fishing and spending time with family. In later years, she lived with her daughter Marsha and son-in-law Jerry, until she moved to Maple View Memory Care Facility. For the past three years, she resided at Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton, ND.
Mildred is survived and will be deeply missed by her children: Marsha (Jerry) Nelson, Grand Forks, ND; Kathy (Gary) Schultz, Wildwood, MO; Todd (Beth) Wert, Mesa, AZ; grandchildren: Chad Bushy, Grand Forks, ND; Todd (Rachael) Bushy, Coon Rapids, MN; Stephanie (Dan) Fedorowicz, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Lindsay (Geoff) Goetz, Chicago, IL; Kevin (Lindsey) Schultz, Eureka, MO; Jessica (Caleb) Hunsaker, Mesa, AZ; Christopher (Jenna) Wert, Scottsdale, AZ; great-grandchildren: Carter Bushy; Dylan, Zachary, Jacob, Tyler, Peyton, and Rhys Bushy; Maya and James Fedorowicz; Matthew, Katherine and Andrew Goetz; Alex Schultz, and Blakely Hunsaker; step great-grandchildren: Taylor Powers and Cole Forrest. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard; parents John and Margaret Bedker; sisters, Hazel Johnson, Pearl Wollschlaeger, Lila Zimmerman, Muriel Bedker (died at 6 months); brothers, Melvin Bedker and Henry Bedker.
