Marlo Ann Gade, 89, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away peacefully June 8, 2021 at Northwood Deaconess Health Center.  Marlo Ann Powers was born on November 7th, 1931 in Walhalla, ND to James and Gladys (Moore) Powers.  Marlo attended grade and middle school in Walhalla until moving to Fargo with her mother and grandparents in 1945.  Marlo graduated from Fargo Central High School and then attended Moorhead State University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education.  She then taught Physical Education at Glenwood, Minnesota public schools before attending the University of North Dakota, where she completed a Master’s degree in physical education in 1957.  After earning her Master’s degree, Marlo taught in the Department of Physical Education at UND from 1957 to 1964, initially as an instructor and later as an Assistant Professor.  In addition to her teaching duties, Marlo was also involved in coaching women’s golf, softball, and other intramural and club sports.

While attending a UND winter commencement ceremony she met Eldon Gade, a Professor of Counseling at the University.  Marlo and Eldon were united in marriage on September 1st, 1962; they had one daughter, Vicki Ann, who passed away on November 9th, 2006.  Marlo and Eldon shared a lifelong love of athletics, and in addition to bowling together were season ticket holders for nearly every sport UND offered.

Marlo continued to be active in athletics throughout her life.  In Fargo area softball she primarily played outfield, and was a member of a team that went to nationals in Seattle.  Most of all, she was very active in state and local bowling associations.  Marlo served as secretary of the city women’s’ bowling association in Grand Forks, and joined the board of directors of the North Dakota Women’s International Bowling Congress in the late 1970s.  Marlo later served as president of the North Dakota WIBC from 1990 to 2006.  In later years Marlo and Eldon helped organize the High Flyers Senior League at Red Ray Lanes in Grand Forks.  In all, she was active almost 40 years in local and state bowling activities and was a Hall of Fame member of the Grand Forks bowling association and North Dakota WIBC.

Marlo was also active in the Wesley United Methodist Church of Grand Forks, serving as a church school secretary among other roles, as well as serving on the United Methodist Women’s Association board.  She was also a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority at Moorhead State University, and was an honorary member of the UND chapter, serving on their home board for many years.

Marlo Ann was preceded in death by her mother Gladys Krumm, father James, stepfather Charles “Chuck” Krumm, her brother Larry, daughter Vicki Ann, husband Eldon, and her dearest cousin Patricia Hansen.  Marlo is survived by her grandson Joseph “Joey” Hensel of Grand Forks, sister and brother in law Elayne and Bill Goldsmith of Clinton, Iowa, and her beloved cousins and godchildren Bill (Connie) Geston of Carpinteria, California, and Susan (Jeff) Bridges of Santa Barbara, California.

Marlo Ann was a very active, friendly, and caring person with a wonderful sense of humor who greatly enjoyed her many friends and relatives.  She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
