Mark Joseph Fuchs, 88, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, November 12, 2023, surrounded by his family.
Mark was born on May 19, 1935 in Humphrey, NE to Anthony and Magdalen (VanDyke) Fuchs. He graduated from St. Francis Central Catholic High School in 1953. He graduated from Commercial Extension Business School, Omaha, NE, in 1954 and went to work for Union Pacific Railroad. Mark was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1958. He was stationed in Massweiler, Germany where he began his career in radio communications. He rose to the rank of Specialist Fourth Class (SP4).
Upon his honorable discharge in 1960, Mark began a 12 year career with Western Union covering the states of Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota and North Dakota. Mark worked for Burlington Northern Railroad before starting his career with the Grand Forks Sector of the U. S. Border Patrol, where he worked for 29 years before retiring in 2002. In Mark’s own words, “The highlight of my retirement was receiving the Distinguished Career Service Award”. This is one of the highest honorary awards granted by the Service.
Mark married Rose Sueper on February 13, 1965, at St. Francis Church in Humphrey, NE. They made their home of 58 years in Grand Forks, ND. She mourns his passing with daughters; Lisa (Jeff) Steffl, Vancouver, WA, Linda (Scott) Telle, East Grand Forks, MN, Lori (Mike) Vanyo, Orono, MN, and Leila (Nelson) Armogan, Rochester, MN; grandchildren, Nicholas Steffl, Jessica Steffl, Joseph Steffl, Isaac Telle, Jacob Vanyo, and Abigail Vanyo; brothers, Alvin (Helen) Fuchs, Columbus, NE, and Jerry (Janet) Fuchs, Oklahoma City, OK.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents and infant grandson, Andrew Telle.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 3:00 PM Sunday, November 19, 2023 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Grand Forks. Visitation will be one hour prior to Mass in the church.
Interment with Military Honors will be at 2:00 PM Monday, November 20, 2023 at Calvary South Cemetery in Grand Forks.
A special thank you to Altru Cancer Center for the great care Mark received and for treating Mark like family. Sincere gratitude is also extended to the caregivers at Hospice of the Red River Valley for showing compassion and providing support and care during Mark’s final days.
