Marilyn K. Skavlem, a resident of Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024, at Valley Senior Living - Grand Forks. Born on March 8, 1948, to Curtis and Frances (Tveten) Hanson in Grand Forks, Marilyn’s life unfolded against the backdrop of this vibrant community. She received her education in Grand Forks, graduating from Central High School in 1966, and furthered her studies at Aakers Business College, earning an associate degree. Marilyn contributed her skills to Border States Electric for several years.
On June 8, 1973, Mandi entered into matrimony with Scott Skavlem in Crookston, Minnesota, and together, they established their home in Grand Forks, nurturing a family that became the cornerstone of their shared journey.
Mandi played a role in initiating the Humane Society in Grand Forks, showcasing her compassion for various avian companions that found their way to the shelter. Known for her welcoming spirit, Mandi maintained a tidy home, offering warmth to all who crossed its threshold. Her deep love for family resonated in the care she showered upon her grandchildren, ensuring each birthday was a cherished occasion. Mandi’s unwavering support extended to her daughter Chelsea and the multitude of activities that brought joy to her grandchildren’s lives.
Alongside her husband Scott, Mandi embraced moments of joy at their lake home, embarked on family travels, and sought refuge from winter’s chill in the welcoming embrace of Florida.
Mandi is survived by her husband, Scott Skavlem of Grand Forks, ND; daughter, Chelsea (Jason) King of East Grand Forks, MN; three grandchildren, Adelie, Bryar, and Sullivan King; brothers, Bruce (Mary) Hanson of Grand Forks, ND, Gary (Karen) Hanson of AZ; mother-in-law, Jean Skavlem of Grand Forks, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her parents, father-in-law Theodore Skavlem, daughter Samantha Skavlem, and brother Brian Hanson precede Mandi in death.
Visitation is scheduled from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Grand Forks, with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Memorial Park South Cemetery, Grand Forks, marking the final chapter in Marilyn’s earthly journey.
