Marilyn Hetland, 93, Grand Forks, ND, died Friday, January 25, 2019 in Edgewood Parkwood Senior Living.
Marilyn was born May 17, 1925 at Aurora, Illinois. She was the daughter of Paul and Vivian Roovart.
Preceded in death by husband James C. Hetland (manager of Straus Clothing Stores) and sons Mark Paul and David J. Hetland.
Survived by son, Steve Hetland of Grand Forks; daughter, Karen Hetland of Richmond, VA; daughter-in-law, Mary Hetland, Fargo, North Dakota; 3 grandchildren, Kristen Ford of Fargo, Allison Hetland of Grand Forks and Michael Hetland of Grand Forks.
She was a lifelong crafter and explored knitting, macramé and embroidery, as well as painting…not because she was an artist (as she would say) but because she loved it. Each piece she completed had an imaginative story to go with it.
She had a real green thumb and always had a variety of beautiful African violets blooming on her windowsill. On that same windowsill, you might also find tomato, pumpkin or zucchini seedlings which would move outside to the garden when the weather permitted.
She always enjoyed her pets, which included parakeets, tropical fish, cats and dogs over the years.
She had a unique sense of humor, sprinkled with unintentional puns; and “Smile” became her motto later in life.
Funeral Services and burial will be private. Memorials are preferred to United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks.
