Lyle "Kirk" Sand, age 79, of Grand Forks, died Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.
Lyle Kirk Sand was born July 12, 1945, in Minot, North Dakota to Melvin and Beryl (Henning) Sand. Kirk was raised in Maxbass where he graduated high school with the class of 1963. In 1965, Kirk was united in marriage to Eileen Young. The couple raised their two children Traci and Wade; they later divorced. On June 17, 1988, Kirk was united in marriage to Romayne Berg Albrecht. In his young adulthood, he began his working career with H.E. Everson Company in Bottineau, starting as a counterman eventually he worked his way to being the store manager and part-owner at the store in Rolla. Through hard work and over 40 years of dedication to the company, he became H.E. Everson Company’s President. Kirk’s work dedication did not stop after retirement. He continued to work for Advance Auto Parts and O’Reilly before his health declined.
Kirk had a need to keep busy and was often found working in his garage and keeping active in the community. He enjoyed watching UND Athletics and the Minnesota Vikings, but his favorite teams to watch and support were his grandchildren’s. Kirk’s family was his pride and joy, and he looked forward to time spent together at their cabin on Maple Lake. He had a love for country music and sharing stories with his family and friends. When Kirk moved into Valley Senior Living, he made sure to be friends with everyone and often checked in with his neighbors. Kirk had a gentleman's presence with a heart full of compassion and would always put others first.
Kirk is survived by his wife of 36 years, Romayne of Grand Forks, ND; children, Traci (Shawn) Gorthy of Surrey, ND, Wade (Natalie) Sand of Cottage Grove, MN, Natalie (Jeffrey) Hintz of Devils Lake, ND, and Darren (Gayle) Albrecht of Grafton, ND; grandchildren, Eric Gorthy, Dalton Albrecht, Alex Gorthy, Brandon Albrecht, Maddison Sand, Dylan Hintz, and Gavin Sand. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Beryl; stepmother, Minnie Sand; first spouse, Eileen; brothers, Monte Sand and Gary Sand; and sister, Vickie Swackhamer.
Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2024, at the Amundson Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Forks. A visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
