Ludvig "Louie" Egstad

Ludvig “Louie” Jerome Egstad, 94, Grand Forks, ND, died Sunday, December 1, 2019 at home.

Ludvig was born May 31, 1925 in Grand Forks, ND, to Ludvig and Judith (Lunde) Egstad. He attended schools in Grand Forks and graduated from Hillcrest Lutheran Brethren Academy in Fergus Falls, MN in 1943. He served in the U. S Army for two years stationed in the Philippine Islands and Japan until his discharge in 1946.

On June 26th, 1954, he married Elsie Such and lived his entire married life in the same house he helped to build.

He worked for Egstad Hardware and Sheet Metal until it was sold in 1961, thereafter serving several years as postal supervisor at the Grand Forks Postal Service until his retirement in 1986. After his retirement, he served with the Grand Forks Park Board as a bus driver for the walk program and also for the youth activities at Bethel Church.

He was baptized and was a lifetime member of Bethel Lutheran Church where he served as treasurer and trustee for many years. His relationship with God was very important to him and he had strong Christian values.

Beyond his service for his Lord, church and country, he loved spending time with family traveling and camping, visiting almost every state and Canada. He enjoyed fishing and gardening among many other outdoor pursuits. He was a longtime season ticket holder for UND Athletics, but appreciated watching many sports, including his Minnesota Twins.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elsie; seven children, Bonnie (Terry) Onken, Randal (Debra) Egstad, Valerie Holtz, Lori Scott, Kevin Egstad, Terry (Carol) Egstad, Brian Egstad; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brothers, Bud Egstad, and Bert (Helen) Egstad; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Olive and her husband, Paul Blikstad; brothers, Judson and David; sisters-in-law, Margaret, Margarita, Judy, Mickey; and son-in-law, Tim Scott.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, December 7, 2019 at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church of Grand Forks. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service at Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks. Visitation will continue for the hour before the service in the church. Burial will be in Memorial Park South Cemetery of Grand Forks.
