Loretta Heyd, 96, of Grand Forks, went to her heavenly home on Friday, December 9, 2022, at Altru Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Loretta Nitschke Heyd was born November 20, 1926, the daughter of Gotfried and Dorothea (Schock) Nitschke, in Ashley, North Dakota. She grew up on the family farm. She received her education in a rural one room McIntosh country school. She was baptized and confirmed in German in the Lutheran Church. She married Jacob Heyd July 31, 1945.
Before Loretta’s ailing health, she was very active. She did water exercises, line dancing, played in the Sunshine band and sang with the Silver Tones at the Senior Center and at nursing homes. She participated in Thursday morning bible study at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She could be found in the kitchen at church many times helping out where needed. One time she helped in making 300 cabbage rolls for the fall festival fund raiser. She always had a nice garden and did a lot of canning, baking, and cooking. She was “Cooking Grandma” to 3 of her grandsons as she was always making some delicious food when they came to visit. Loretta was an active member of the Germans from Russia for many years. She spoke German fluently and often sang in German for many events.
Loretta is survived by 4 sons, DuWayne (Rhonda), Frank (Betty) of Grand Forks, Clyde (Debbie) of Billings, MT and John (Arleen) of Schafer, MN; daughter Roxann (Jayson) Sorum of Grand Forks; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Delores Schneider of Ashley, ND and Lenora Nitschke Johnson of Aberdeen, SD, and many nieces and nephews.
