Leona Schwartzenberger (Franz), age 90, of Grand Forks, N.D., died peacefully at her home Tuesday, May 30, 2023.
Leona was born in Logan County, N.D., on Oct. 13, 1932, to John and Pauline (Graf) Franz – the youngest of 8 children. She married Richard Schwartzenberger on June 1, 1953, in Napoleon, N.D., and they had 6 children. Leona earned her GED and worked various jobs in Napoleon, including server, clerk and bar maid.
After her husband passed away in 1987, she moved to Grand Forks in 1988 to be with some of her children. In Grand Forks she worked as a waitress but mostly as a clerk at various grocery stores. She was an exceptional baker and even provided Christmas trays of goodies for her daughter’s clients for many years. She enjoyed playing cards any chance she got and was playing almost to the end.
Leona is survived by her three daughters, Sharon Reis, Sheila Edwards, both of Grand Forks, and Sharmaine (Darrell) Stoppler of Bismarck, N.D.; two sons, Richard (Chris) Schwartzenberger of Grand Forks and Randy (Christa) Schwartzenberger of Bismarck; son-in-law, Greg Braun, Wahpeton, ND; 10 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard; daughter Susan Braun; granddaughter Haley Braun; sons-in-law Robert Reis and Gerald Edwards; sisters Martha, Emma, Edna and Ellena; brothers Albert, Edwin and Aldon; and numerous in-laws.
Memorial services will be Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St. in Grand Forks. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the start of the service. Interment will be at the Catholic cemetery in Napoleon at a later date. Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Grand Forks, or a charity of your choice.
