Larry J. Holien

Larry Holien, 69, of Thompson, ND, passed away early Saturday morning, November 10, 2018 in his home with his family by his side.

Larry John Holien, son of Oscar and Verna (Mathiason) Holien was born in Grand Forks, ND on August 15, 1949. He grew up in Thompson, ND where he farmed his whole life beginning at an early age alongside his father. He attended Thompson Public School, graduating in 1968. Larry enlisted in the Army Reserves and served from 1969-1975.

Larry married his high school sweetheart, Kathryn Griggs on February 12, 1972. Together they continued his lifelong passion as a farmer, growing wheat, barley, edible beans and potatoes. They raised three daughters and taught them each to love family and respect the land as well. Due to health, Larry retired from farming in 2002, but he always kept busy and had an interest in the farm, helping neighbors and family when he could. After retirement, he was able to devote more time to hobbies such as collecting antique John Deere tractors and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Larry was an active baptized and confirmed member of Walle Lutheran Church and raised his family with a deep faith in God. Later in Life, Larry was blessed with three beautiful granddaughters and enjoyed his time with them immensely. Being grandpa was one of his favorite roles in life.

Larry is survived by his wife of more than 46 years, Kathryn; his three daughters, Marie Holien, Betsey Aasen and Jenny Breidenbach; son-in law, Jeremy Aasen; three granddaughters, Gretta and Elsie Aasen and Ava Breidenbach; sisters, Carol Syverson, Aneta, ND, Marjorie (Merle) Gustafson, Burnsville, MN and Marlene (Wayne) Wilson, Thompson, ND; sister-in-law, Darlene Holien, Grand Forks; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dale Holien; a brother-in-law, Truvaine Syverson; and nephew, Kim Syverson.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be directed to Walle Lutheran Church or to Altru Hospice.

Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Walle Lutheran Church near Thompson, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service in Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. Visitation will continue for the hour before the service in the church. Interment will be in the Walle Lutheran Church Cemetery. Arrangements are with Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks.
