June Lavinia Stott passed away surrounded by family at Altru Hospital in the early hours of Thursday, December 29, 2022, at the age of 86.
Born in the village of Flixton, Suffolk County, England on July 19, 1936, she was the daughter of John (“Jack”) and Laura Hilda (Sampson) Sutherland. The family moved to North Creake, Fakenham, England where they operated and lived over the Earl of Leicester pub in the 1950s.
In the late 1950s June worked at the BX at Sculthorpe AFB outside of North Creake where she met a US Airman named David Walter Stott. She would tell her friends at the time, “See that man? I’m going to marry him!” David and June were married in a 12th century church in North Creake on October 17, 1959. They had two children, Beverley in 1960 and Richard in 1964, by which time they had moved to the USA and were stationed at Grand Forks AFB.
June became a United States citizen, a personal point of pride for her. She always retained her characteristic British accent throughout her life in America. June worked at base exchanges when the family was stationed at Ramstein AFB, Germany and at Grand Forks AFB. When David retired from the Air Force in 1981, they settled in Grand Forks. June then worked as department manager at Walmart for 19 years.
She was an avid knitter, having learned from her granny at age 3, and in her later years she knit and donated hundreds of hats to the Altru Cancer Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, David, and her parents.
She is survived by her brother Tony Sutherland, Oxford England; daughter Beverley (Rich) Longoria, Grand Forks; Richard Stott, Aurora, CO; granddaughter Kelly Pearson, Manchester, England; grandson Michael (Sara) Longoria, East Grand Forks; and three great grandchildren, Alison Pearson and Ivy Brereton in England, and Myron Longoria, East Grand Forks.
A private celebration of life will be planned for Summer 2023.
