John Allan Stranger, formerly of St. Vincent, MN was Born September 2, 1937, in Lakota, ND and passed away on June 2, 2024, after a short stay at the Good Samaritan Nursing home in Larimore.John graduated from Pembina High School in 1955. After High School, John served in the U.S. Airforce for five years before receiving an Honorable Discharge. He married Percette Grube in June of 1957 and worked at that time as a fieldman for the office of the Red River Valley Potato Growers, located in East Grand Forks, MN.
In 1968 he graduated from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. He went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Education Supervision, in 1971. After receiving his master’s degree, he taught school in Grand Forks, California and Manvel.
In April of 1985 John married Sharon Kay Holmes. After retiring from teaching in 1995, John went on to work for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency, eventually retiring in the year 2000. After retirement, John started Stranger Books, selling new and used, like new, books online. Stranger Books was a huge success and John loved going to rummage sales, flea markets and thrift stores to find the old and new books.
John enjoyed being a member of the American Legion, VFW, ELKS, Eagles, National Association Retired Government Workers, and the National Education Association.
John’s special interests were his children and grandchildren. John’s hobbies included watching baseball games, playing golf and card games with his many friends. Most of all, John cherished his time with his wife Sharon.
John is survived by his wife Sharon, Children, Jay Stranger, Larry Stranger and Janelle (Chad) Holth. Grand Children, Garrett, Trevor, Serena, Morgan, and Willow. Stepson, Jeff (Kathryn) Holmes and Stepdaughter, Jana Boberg. Step Grandchildren, Matthew and Sam Boberg and Hannah (Boberg) Garrison. Step Great Grand Daughter Teagan Boberg. Niece, Deb (Day) Hurtt, Nephews, Scott Stranger, Steven Stranger, Niece, Suzanne Stranger.
John was proceeded in death by his father, Fred Stranger, Mother, Babe Stranger, Brother, Lynn (Doris) Stranger, Niece, Sherri Stranger, Nephew Jim Day and Sister Jill Stranger
A Celebration of Life and a Memorial Service is being held at Amundson’s Funeral Home at 2 pm on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.
