Jean Hoverson

Jean Celia Hoverson, 91, formerly of Niagara, died October 7, 2023, at Edgewood, Grand Forks.

Jean was born March 23, 1932, at Dahlen, ND, the daughter of Elmer and Alma (Urdahl) Alme. She was baptized on May 1, 1932, at Zion Lutheran Church. She was confirmed on October 21, 1945, at Dahlen Lutheran Church.

Jean was united in marriage to Russell Hoverson on July 16, 1947. They were married for 70 years.

Jean worked on the family farm where she fed many cows, calves, lambs, and hogs. She was most fond of the new baby calves, but the newborn lambs were also endeared to her. They started their life in a big box in our kitchen by the oil stove, where they learned to drink from a pop bottle.

When Jean’s sons had left the farm, she took over driving the tractor with the cultivator in the spring. In the fall, she drove the grain trucks. She could back them up to the grain auger and fill the bins or haul grain to town.

Jean loved gardening, cooking, quilting, and family events. Jean sewed over 500 quilts and Russell tied them. They were given to family, firemen, graduates, children, homeless, and many nonprofit groups in North Dakota and Minnesota.

She loved spending time with her family. Jean taught Sunday School and Summer Bible School for many years. She was involved in many church activities and was WELCA President.

Jean is survived by her sons Larry (Marlys), Roger (Sonia), and Lyle (Debby), grandchildren: Jeff (Joanne), Jonathan (Shelane), Julie (Scott), Zachary (Nicole), Sarah, and Katie (Max); great grandchildren: Caleb (Deli), John (Danica), Kristian (Mari), Lydia, Victoria, Ezekiel, Kellie, Cassidy, Jamie, Nicolas, Jeorgia, Ellie, Elijah, and Sophie; great-great grandchildren: Hosanna, Micah, and Miriam, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Russell, son Kenneth, daughter Joni Kay, sister Anna, brothers: Henry, Stanely, Eddie, Steen, Einar, Alden, and Elmer.

Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. at Elk Valley Lutheran Church, McCanna, ND.
Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the start of the service at the church.
