Janis Kay Payne (Jan), passed away peacefully on May 21, 2024, surrounded by her husband and children at the age of 68. Born Janis Kay Decker to Helen and John Decker on December 12, 1955.
Jan graduated from High School in 1973 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Psychology from Park College of Parkville, Missouri in 1997.
In 1978, Janis married the love of her life, Gerald George Payne. Together, they raised two children, Jennifer (Jenn) Homie and Jeffrey (Jeff) Payne, and was blessed with six grandchildren: Aaliyah, Parker, Kayden, Gavin, Landri, and Kane.
Jan's hobbies included crocheting, sewing, gardening, and reading mystery novels. Jan's warm, welcoming kitchen was the heart of her home, where she baked the best brownies and annually hosting family Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Her generosity made her a beloved figure in her community, where she served on the Emerado City Council and volunteered at the local elementary school and led several girl scouts’ programs.
Jan is survived by her husband Gerald; her children, Jennifer and Jeffery; her grandchildren, Aaliyah, Parker, Kayden, Gavin, Landri, and Kane, her older Sister Erna, and three brothers, George, Jimmy, and John, along with their families.
The services to honor and celebrate Jan's life will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Amundson Funeral Home. A reception will follow the celebration of life service, where friends and family can share memories and comfort one another.
Jan's life was one of dedication and service. After graduating from High School in 1973. She embarked on a rewarding career as dedicated member of the United States Air Force. For over two decades, Jan served her country honorably. After an honorable retirement from the Air Force, Jan served as a Lieutenant with the Grand Forks County Corrections for 23 years, retiring on November 30, 2020.
Janis Kay Payne's legacy is one of unwavering love, commitment, and community service. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her, and her memory will be a blessing to her family and the many lives she touched.
Janis Kay Payne will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her spirit of generosity and love will continue to inspire those who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
