Grand Forks – Jan D. Gierman, 78 of Mekinock died Wednesday January 22, 2020 at Altru Hospital.
Jan was born October 9, 1941 to Maurice and Vera Gierman. He attended Michigan State University graduating with a Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning and a Bachelor of Liberal Studies. Jan continued with post graduate work in Geography focusing on the use of computers in Geography. This led him to work with the Michigan State Police using computerized mapping and data analysis to track and find a child serial killer in Detroit. Jan continued his work with the State of Michigan in the Department of Fish and Game, using computer technology to track fish and game and to assist fisheries in the Great Lakes and region.
Jan went on to work for World Vision, using computers to track and supply missionaries, communities, and children supported and served by World Vision mission work.
Jan developed expertise in PeopleSoft computer technology and installed and maintained PeopleSoft computer technology in Wyoming, Louisiana, and North Dakota. Jan retired in 2016 from the North Dakota University System.
Jan was tenderhearted and especially loved animals. He was a horseman, animal trainer, and had a soft touch especially when training kittens and young animals. He loved living in the country and spent most of his life in rural locations.
Jan had an infectious laugh and loved to spend time with friends and those who loved him the most. He was preceded in death by his parents Maurice and Vera and is survived by his wife, Dr. Pamela Kalbfleisch of Mekinock, His sister Ms. Deeana Pumplin of Port Townsend WA, His sons from an earlier marriage, Dr. Todd Gierman from Cary NC and Dr. Josh Gierman of Oklahoma City OK, three grand-daughters, a nephew, cousins, and many friends and loved ones.
The funeral will be held at 11 am Friday, January 31, 2020 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks with Pastor Kirk Meseck officiating. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the start of the service. The Family suggests memorials be considered for the Calvary Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, or The Greater Grand Forks Community Theatre.
