James Lynn Smiley

July 31, 1944 — February 8, 2020

James Lynn Smiley, 75, of Grand Forks, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Center in Larimore, ND.

James was born July 31, 1944, the son of Joseph & Margaret (Means) Smiley in New Brighton, PA. He attended school and graduated from Maryville High School in Buffalo, NY.

James married Kathleen Wilson on May 1, 1965 at Rosendahl Church, Reynolds ND. Together they raised 3 children.

He enlisted with the US Air Force in 1963 living in Minot, Grand Forks, Turkey, Philippines and other cities in the United States. He served a total of 20 years before he was honorably discharged in 1983. James and family retired to Grand Forks and he then worked other jobs including Nodak Cab Company and Home of Economy among others.

James enjoyed watching Buffalo Bills Football, UND Hockey and MN Twins Baseball. He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, watching TV including Star Trek and old western movies.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughter, Wendi (Ted) of Grand Forks; son, William (Darcy - Wife) of Fargo; grandchildren, Tyler (Clark) and Carman (Anderson); nephew, Steven (Darrell - wife) of Kalispell, MT.

James is preceded in death by his parents; son, Stuart; brothers. Harry and Richard. 

Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2020 at Sharon Lutheran Church in Grand Forks with visitation the hour prior to the memorial service in the church.
