James Thomas Simundson, 38, died May 9, 2019 at Altru Hospital after a short, brave battle with aggressive cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends as he peacefully left this earth. James was born on August 22, 1980 to Cheryl and Roger Simundson. He grew up in Grand Forks and graduated from Red River High School in 1999. He then went on to take classes through Lake Region State College in Devils Lake.
James was a hard-working and social person and loved the many years he managed Pizza Hut in Grand Forks. After leaving Pizza Hut, he went on to work various construction jobs. He enjoyed being able to build things and work with his hands. Anyone that knew James, knew that he loved to solve problems and figure out new ways to do things. He enjoyed tinkering in the garage, helping his friends with projects, and working in the yard. Some of his favorite pastimes included spending time at Island Lake with friends out on the pontoon, trying to catch fish, nature photography, and collecting rocks. He was talented musically, teaching himself how to play both the guitar and piano, and writing his own songs. He loved to go play music with his friends and just hang out.
James had an infectious smile and a laid-back personality. He was famous for some of his catch phrases like “fair enough”. No matter what, he saw the best in people and always gave them the benefit of the doubt. He will be missed by many, and his passing has left an empty spot in many people’s hearts.
He is survived by his mother Cheryl; sister Julie (Ian); nieces and nephew Vivian, Lilian, and Ethan; cousins Shane, Tyler and Erik Simundson; uncles Jon (Pat) Simundson and Larry (Mary) Durkin.
He was preceded in death by his father Roger Simundson; uncles Barry Simundson and Mike Durkin; cousin Kate Sherritt; and all his grandparents.
