He lived and was educated in Crosby, ND where his father owned and operated the Crosby Creamery.  Following service in the United States Navy, he attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1950.

Al married Phyllis Kjerstad in 1951.  They made their first home in Memphis where Al attended and graduated from the Southern College of Optometry.  In 1953 he established a private optometric practice in Beulah, ND where he was active in the community and in state optometric groups.  He served as president of the North Dakota Optometric Association, the State Board of Examiners for Optometry and as a member of the North Dakota Health Council.  He served on the Beulah school board, the Chamber of Commerce, the Eagles, VFW, the Masonic Lodge, and the Zion Lutheran Church Council.
