Iogene Corrine Bjornstad, 90 of Grand Forks, North Dakota died Friday, November 3, 2023 at Valley Senior Living, Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Imo was born to Hans and Tilda (Brodland) Bjornstad, March 31, 1933. She was baptized by her grandfather, Rev. O.H. Brodland. She grew up on the farm near Nielsville, MN. She attended grade school in Nielsville and graduated from high school in Climax, MN. She graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN with a degree in elementary education and received her master’s degree from UND. She taught first grade in Oslo, MN for 2 years, then Virginia, MN for 10 years and enjoyed lifelong friends there. She was a parish worker at Ascension Church near the Grand Forks Air Force Base for 3 years. She then taught first grade at Kelly School in Grand Forks for 27 years until retiring in 1997.
Imo enjoyed music very much, she directed church choirs and directed the Parkwood Singers at Parkwood Assisted Living for several years.
Summer vacations included trips to Norway three times, other European countries and many states. While in Alaska, they flew to Nome, where her grandmother, Mabel Brodland had worked at an orphanage. Her travel companion was another teacher, Eva Stengle. Later they included her sister, Ella and sister-in-law, Janet. Some of Imo’s favorite places were Glacier National Park, Seattle WA and Norway.
Imogene was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, James, his wife Delores, and Odin, brother-in-law, Bill Coffing, a niece and a nephew.
She is survived by her sister, Ella Marie Coffing of St. Anthony MN; sister-in-law, Janet Bjornstad Grand Forks, ND; nieces and nephews, Jonathan (Johnna) Coffing, Stephanie Lindgren, Julie (Todd) Olson, Mark (Suzanne) Bjornstad, Philip Bjornstad, Lois (Mark) Wagner, Eunice Pinette, Carl Bjornstad, and Paul (Barbara) Bjornstad and 17 great and great-great nieces and nephews and several cousins.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 10, 2023 at Sharon Lutheran Church, Grand Forks, North Dakota. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 10, 2023 at Sharon Lutheran Church, Grand Forks, North Dakota.
