Herman Vetter, 80, passed away at Lutheran Sunset Home, Grafton, ND, on November 20, 2020.
Herman was born to Rochus and Catherine (Steier) Vetter near Selz, ND, on September 3, 1940. He attended grade school at Rich Valley Country School, and he graduated from Maddock High School in 1958. After high school, Herman enlisted in the army and spent a year of his service stationed in Pan Mun Jom, Korea, at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) as a radio specialist. He was also stationed in Colorado Springs where he climbed Pikes Peak on New Year’s Eve, 1961, with the AdAmAn Club to operate a radio for a local station. He was proud to be a guest climber, an honor not awarded to many.
Herman married Sharon Boldenow on April 27, 1966, in Leeds, ND. They made their home in Grand Forks, ND, and had two daughters. Herman worked as a customer service agent for North Central, Republic and Northwest Airlines for 39 years, retiring in 2002.
Herman was a member of the East Grand Forks American Legion, a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and Sharon Lutheran Church.
Growing up on a farm instilled a very strong work ethic in Herman. He took pride in a job well done, and he would do anything to help someone whenever he could. He was a man of few words, but cared for people deeply. He had a great sense of humor, too.
Herman and Sharon enjoyed many great summers at Ridgewood Campground near Detroit Lakes, MN. They made lifelong friends that became like a second family. Herman always said a bad day at the lake was better than a good day at work.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Rochus and Catherine Vetter, brothers Wendlen Vetter and Isador Vetter, sisters-in-law Agnes Vetter and Verna Vetter, brother-in-law Elgin Larson, and nephew Wade Vetter.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sharon Vetter (Grand Forks), daughters Sandy (Tom) Alinder (Detroit Lakes, MN) and Stacy (Randy) Votava (Grand Forks), grandchildren Lindsey Alinder (Minneapolis, MN), Adam Alinder (Grand Forks), Joey Votava (Grand Forks) and Jacob Votava (Grand Forks), siblings Bernese Larson (Gillette, WY) and Ron (Judi) Vetter (Harvey, ND), and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
A Private Memorial Service will be held at a later date. A link to a recording of the service will be available to view soon.
