Herbert J. (Herb) Wogsland of Grand Forks, ND passed away on the morning of December 24th. He was born March 22, 1924 in Harding twp, Ramsey County, North Dakota at the family homestead. Herb was the eldest son of the late Melvin and Mable (Paulson) Wogsland. He was raised in rural northeastern ND and graduated in 1942 from Hoople High School.
He was employed at the Walsh County State Bank until he entered the army in 1943 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota and then on to Fort Francis in Wyoming where he completed his basic training. Herb attended the U. of Wyoming and Iowa State under the ASTP program. He served with the 409th Infantry of the 103rd Division in Europe and received 2 Battle Stars. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After the war he returned to banking in Grafton and Fordville.
In 1947 Herb married Lyla Marie Stenerson of Edinburg, ND. They moved to Minneapolis and then on to Moorhead where he worked for Commercial Credit. In 1957 the moved to Devils Lake, ND where he worked for Dodge-Chrysler for the next 6 years. He then returned to banking and the family moved to Grand Forks where he worked at the Red River National Bank (now US Bank). In 1970 he left Grand Forks where his association with US Bank took him and Lyla to Fargo and Minneapolis. He then became president of First Bank St. Paul and president of First Edina Natl. Bank. After retirement, Herb was associated with Citizens State Bank of Fergus Falls, MN for 3 years.
Herb was involved in many service organizations: Rotary Clubs in Devils Lake, Edina, and Missoula; Kiwanis in Fargo and Fergus Falls; Exchange Club in GF; Elks in Devils Lake and past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge in Grand Forks.
Retirement years were spent at Blanch Lake and Detroit Lakes, MN; Mesa, AZ; Hamilton and Missoula, MT and back to Grand Forks.
He was a lifelong Lutheran and served on boards and committees in Devils Lake, Grand Forks, Fargo, Edina, and Mesa.
Herb is survived by his ever loving wife, Lyla of 72 years and 2 sons: Robert J. (Kimmi) of Stevensville, Mt and Thomas K. of Grand Forks; 5 grandchildren: Jason (Carrie) of Polson, Mt; Jessica (Andy) of Missoula; Melissa of Missoula; Peter of Salem, OR; Rachel of Seoul, S. Korea; and many nieces, nephews and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Neil (Marilyn) and sister law Marlene. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Mabel, brother Gordon and his wife, Elaine, and brother Jim.
Memorial Services will be 10:30 AM Friday, December 27, 2019 in the Havig Heen Auditorium Chapel of Valley Senior Living on 42nd St., Grand Forks. Visitation will be for the hour before the service. Inurnment will be in the Calvary Lutheran Church Columbarium, Grand Forks. Arrangements are with Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks.
