Helen M. Daucsavage, 92, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, July 13, 2021, surrounded by family at Valley Senior Living Center.
Helen Margaret Hager (Foltz) was born March 5, 1929, in Ramsey County, ND. Her birth parents were Jacob and Katherine (Gefroh) Hager. She was raised by by her Aunt Adeline and Uncle Leo, whom she lovingly called mom and dad, in Devils Lake on the North side. Later the family moved to Grand Forks where Helen graduated from St. James Academy.
Helen married the love of her life, Leonard Daucsavage on July 19, 1948. They lived in Fisher, MN for a short time before returning to Grand Forks where they raised their family of 6 children.
Helen took pride in working her way through the retail ladder into various management positions for Sears, Dayton’s, the Better Half, Frabjous and Gordons Jewelry. She loved mentoring others and using common sense, customer care and all her learned experiences to train many people through the years.
Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks for 71 years, where she was involved with the Altar Society, and was a Catechism teacher.
She enjoyed being a part of the Foresters and even tried her hand at being a cub scout leader.
Helen was a woman of many skills and talents. There really wasn't anything that she was afraid to do. If the plumbing needed tinkering with or a light socket needed replacing, she figured out how to get the job done. She found much joy in oil painting and painted many pictures for every family member and lots of friends. She always said, "you can hang it in the garage if you don't like it!"
Some of her favorite past times were reading Agatha Christie books, doing the daily crossword puzzle, crocheting and knitting many blankets, sewing clothes and playing games, especially pinochle...where she always taught us a lesson, even just a month ago.
She never missed a day praying the Rosary and reading her daily devotions. She loved her Catholic Church and was such an example of faith, grace and fortitude.
Helen loved preparing large meals and gathering family. The big holidays were always something to look forward to often celebrating with overflowing pans of German noodles with a side of watermelon, ending with our favorite desert of fudimons.
She was well known for her love of Oreo cookies that she willingly shared with all the grandchildren and greats. Even the nurses at Altru brought her some during her short stay in the hospital.
She often bragged about how she had the best children, grandchildren and greats! Her quick wit and fun play on words will forever make us smile. She was the hub to our wheel whom we all cherished. Our mother dear will be greatly missed but all the memories she helped create will be held deep in our hearts.
Helen is survived by her children Terry (Kathy) Daucsavage, Grand Forks; Bruce (Janet), Bend, OR; Juanita (Rich) Short, Grand Forks; Renee (Jack) Anderson, Grand Forks; Kellie Karlstad, Devils Lake, ND; daughter-in-law, Ruth Daucsavage, Sioux Falls, SD; 14 grandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren; sister, Marie Albrecht, OK; brother Jim (Kathy) Foltz, Minot, ND; sister-in-law, Irene Hager, Rugby, ND; sister-in-law Alice Lorenz, Minot, ND and many beloved nieces and nephews;
