Eugene J. Nielsen, 82, Reynolds, North Dakota, passed away unexpectedly on May 18, 2024, at Sanford Medical Center on Broadway in Fargo, ND. He was surrounded by loved ones.
Eugene Jay Nielsen was born September 4, 1941, in Devils Lake, ND, son of Jens and Vernice Nielsen. He was raised in Oberon, ND and was the oldest of five children.
He received his education in the Oberon Public School, graduating in 1959. Eugene attended Interstate Business College in Fargo for two years. He completed his Accounting degree at University of N.D.
He married Janice Nyhusmoen December 28, 1969, in Sheyenne, N.D. They moved to Reynolds, ND, in 1970, where they started a family and have created lifelong memories.
He was passionate in researching Genealogy all his life. He wrote several books on his family history and the history of Oberon, ND and surrounding areas including the Genealogy of Isaac and Sarah Burgess in 1961. A second book called "Echoes of the Past", a history of Oberon, ND.
Eugene helped organize the Farmers Market in Grand Forks. He grew a large garden for many years. He loved working in the yard and gardening.
He was active as a Sunday School teacher and on various offices and committees in the Church. Eugene was an alderman on the Reynolds City Council for over three terms. He was very active in the Grand Forks International Credit Association serving as President of the local group and President of the district in 1987-88.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Janice and three daughters, Karin Nielsen, Sarah (Darren) Tollefson and Rachel (Jason) Stegman; Six Grandchildren, Samuel (Gabi) Figg, Annika Figg, Mark Tollefson, Emma Tollefson, John Stegman and Lauren Stegman; and his sister Eloise (Kenneth) Ploium; sister-in-laws: Mary Nielsen, Betty Georgeson, and LouAnn Nyhusmoen; brother-in-law Jake Goertzen and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernice and Jens; brothers Rodney and Kirby; sister, Junita Goertzen; brothers-in-law Arnold Nyhusmoen, and Gary Georgeson.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 23rd at 11 am at Trinity Free Lutheran with a visitation one hour before the service.
Burial will follow at the Reynolds Americus Cemetery.
