Eugene “Gene” Carl Bengs, 93, passed away at Hatton Prairie Village, Hatton, ND, on Saturday, November 14th with his family at his side. Born to Walter and Verna (Griese) Bengs on May 1st, 1927 in rural Reynolds, ND.
Gene was baptized and confirmed at the Holmes Church, Reynolds, where he remained a member. In his youth, he enjoyed playing baseball, participating in church youth activities and working for local farmers. He graduated from Central High School, Grand Forks, ND, and attended both Naperville College in Illinois and Hanson’s Auto School in Fargo, ND. Gene also served 2 years in the Army, stationed in France.
He married Betty Abrahamson on July 19, 1958 in Warren, MN, and made their home in Grand Forks where they were blessed with 5 children.
Gene farmed for many years with his brother, son and grandson, and was also employed at International Harvester in Grand Forks for over 20 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family, spending time with his grandchildren, and daily phone calls with his children. One of his favorite activities was having coffee with friends in Hatton and Northwood, ND. He served on the board of Hatton Prairie Village and as a 4H leader. In October of 2018, Eugene was honored to experience Washington D.C. with the Veteran’s Honor Flight.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Betty, Thompson, ND; children, Gerald (Joan) Bengs, Thompson, Tamara Bengs-Anderson, Aneta, ND, Debra Sumner, Grand Forks, Daniel (Nadine) Bengs, Otsego, MN, and Kevin (Bobbette) Bengs, Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Rachel (Kyle) Trontvet, Heather (Chad) Coots, Travis Bengs, Gabriella Bengs, Matthew Strang, Marcus Bengs, and Brandon Bengs; great-grandchildren, Harper, Jaxen, and Beckett Trontvet, and Clyde Coots; sister, Ruby Schroeder; sister-in-law, Beatrice Bengs; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death is his parents; siblings, Alvin Bengs, Dorothy Kositzky, and Lorraine Schendel; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Schroeder, and John Schendel; son-in-law, Kevin Anderson.
Visitation will be Friday, November 20th from 5 to 7 p.m. at Amundson Funeral Home in Grand Forks. Face masks will be required to attend. A private funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 21 in Holmes United Methodist Church. A livestream of the service will be available through the Holmes United Methodist Church Facebook page.
