Edwin W. “Ed” Fuehrer, 93, Grand Forks, ND, died Monday, May 27, 2019 in Valley Memorial Home Eldercare, Grand Forks.
Edwin was born December 20, 1925 in Zeeland, ND, the son of William and Lydia (Maier) Fuehrer. He was raised and attended school in Zeeland up until the time he made the decision to travel to California as a young man to work in the shipyards as a sheet metal worker. In 1944, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a gunner aboard a merchant marine ship that supplied gasoline to the troops during WWII. After the war, he moved to Linton, ND briefly before coming to Grand Forks to attend Moler Barber College. He began working as a barber in 1949 and later owned and operated the Dakota Barber Shop and the Security Barber Shop until his retirement in 1997. He met and married his wife of 64 years, LaDora Mae King, on September 28, 1952.
Ed loved to tinker in the garage, was an avid woodworker and hunter of deer, duck, geese and pheasants. He was also a member of the gun club for many years. Ed and LaDora were lifetime members of the Good Sam Camping Club until the summer of 2016 when pulling the trailer became too stressful, not necessarily on Ed but on the rest of his family! He was self-taught in playing the piano and accordion and loved to entertain on which ever was available. The first place you found him when he was moved into assisted living was at the piano.
Ed served as a Past Commander of the Grand Forks VFW Post 1874 from 1971 – 1972.
