Edna D. Johnson, 102, of Grand Forks, passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 4000 Valley Square Woodside Village Oakcrest.
Edna was born July 18, 1916, on the family farm in Fredrick Township, ND, the daughter of Carl & Eliza (Jacobson) Tweed. She grew up on the family farm, graduated from 8th grade at Liberty Consolidated School and from Crosby High School. She was a member of Skarbo Lutheran Church in Fredrick Township and Concordia Lutheran Church in Crosby.
Edna was employed in Williston and Crosby as office clerk. In 1970 she enrolled in a nine-month accounting course at Minot Business College and went to work for the City of Minot Treasurer in June 1970 where she continued until retirement in July of 1981. She returned to Crosby, ND after retirement.
In 1940 Edna married Frank Smola and they had one son, Gary Wayne. In 1952 she married Ralph Johnson.
In April 2004, Edna moved to Grand Forks, ND and resided at Parkwood Place to be closer to her granddaughter Stacey and her family.
Edna loved crocheting, knitting and making quilts until her eyes no longer permitted her to do that. She kept working crosswords under her reading machine until about a month ago to keep her mind sharp, and that it was, up to age 102!
Edna is survived by granddaughters, Stacey Thorsell (Todd) in Grand Forks, and Corey Merenda in Tampa, FL; daughter-in-law, Kaye Johnson also in Tampa; 2 great-grandsons, Tracy (Brooke) Thorsell and Jesse Thorsell in Grand Forks; 1 great-great- grandson, Willie in Grand Forks; sister, Lois in Bozeman MT; several nieces and nephews and 2 very special friends, Tudy Koland (mother of Stacey) and Lolly Moran.
Edna is preceded in death by her parents, 4 siblings, her husband, and son, (Gary Johnson of Grand Forks).
Memorial Service: 2:30 p.m. on Friday, January 4 at Parkwood Place 749 S. 30th St. in Grand Forks with visitation one hour prior to the service.
