Duane R. Taylor, 94, Grand Forks, died Friday, August 30, 2019, in Altru Hospital.
Duane was born January 14, 1925, the son of Fred and Millie (Raatz) Taylor in Verona, North Dakota.
He was raised and educated in Verona, graduating from Verona High School in 1943. In November of 1943, Duane joined the US Navy where he was sailed on the USS Holmes County (LST-836). He proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in April of 1946.
On June 6, 1952, Duane married Jeanne M. Anderson in Dickinson, North Dakota. Duane attended Valley City State College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree. They then went to Greeley, Colorado and Lawrence, Kansas where he received his Master’s Degree in Education/Administration.
He worked in Mott, North Dakota as a teacher and a coach leading Mott High School to the 7th District Class B tournament in 1952 and 1953. Then he began working in Edgeley, North Dakota as a superintendent. Later, they moved to Grand Forks where he started as a principle at Nathan Twining at the Grand Forks Air Force Base. In 1971, Duane started his career as an assistant superintendent with the Grand Forks Public School District until his retirement in 1986. After his retirement from the school district, Duane became a bailiff for Grand Forks County.
Duane loved socializing with his family and friends, golfing, watching sports, and playing cards. He was a member of the American Legion and the Elks Club.
Duane is survived by his wife Jeanne, children: Karen (Matthew) Phelps, Karla (Gene) Johnson, Doug (Robert Ferguson) Taylor; grandchildren: Chris (Meghan) Phelps, Jenna (Jared) Berg, Lindsay Serbousek, Janelle Johnson, Scott Johnson; 7 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister LuWanna Hanson, and brothers: Willis and Dick.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, September 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the service.
Burial will be held Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Park North Cemetery.
