Dorothy Mae Hoistad departed this earthly life on December 29, 2021. She was born on May 30, 1928 in Grand Forks, ND to Thomas and Myrtle Carson. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Buxton, ND, graduating from Buxton High School in 1945. She earned a degree from Aaker's Business College in Grand Forks in 1946 and began working at the E. W. Brady & Co. accounting firm where she met her husband Stanley Hoistad. They married in 1951 and Dorothy became an exemplary full-time mother to their four children, always stepping up to serve as room mother, den mother, PTA volunteer, and Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed playing on several bowling leagues and volunteering at Calvary Lutheran Church cultivating many long-time friends. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Woodside Village at Valley Senior Living on 42nd. Dorothy and Stan were staunch supporters of the University of North Dakota and could always be found at the hockey and basketball games. She loved most spectator sports and could be counted on to follow all the UND hockey players as they launched professional careers. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her sister Betty Samuelson. Left to cherish her memory are her brother Tom Carson, her four children, Mary Ziegler (Richard) of Fairfield Glade,TN, Susan Schumacher (Warren) of Portland, OR, Gregory Hoistad (Sheri) of Bloomington, MN and Peter Hoistad (Melanie) of Grand Forks, four grandchildren, Scott Ziegler (Cheryl Harrison), Anna Ziegler, Rachel Jones (Zach) and Alexandra Penny (Brett), two step-grandsons Todd Schumacher Emmons (Alyssa) and Kurt Schumacher (Liz) and nine great-grandchildren. There will be no service at this time. Anyone wishing to make a gift in Dorothy’s memory should consider the Valley Senior Living Foundation or the Stanley and Dorothy Hoistad Accounting Scholarship at UND. If there is a kitchen window in heaven, Mom will be there, waiting and watching for her kids to get home.
