Donald Richard Iverson, 86, died November 7, 2020 in Mayville, ND. Don was born March 30, 1934, the eldest son of Franz and Irene (Haugen) Iverson, in Grand Forks, ND, where he grew up and attended Central High School. In 1950, Don joined the North Dakota Army National Guard and was called to active duty in the US Army for the Korean War, serving there in 1951 as a combat engineer, and returning home to finish his time with the Guard.
After completing his military service, Don resided in Grand Forks, where he married Berna Dene “Tinky” Montgomery on April 17, 1953 and started a family that would be blessed with four daughters and one son. He worked for the W.B. Skinner Company until taking a position in gas service with NSP in 1959, where he worked until retirement in 1992, also serving as a safety controller. Don, Tinky, and their family moved to Thompson in 1972, before they divorced in 1979.
He married Janice McEnelly on October 17, 1981. After retirement, Don and Jan moved to a farm in the Hatton area near Golden Lake, where they had a cabin at since 1981. Don loved spending time at the lake and farm during his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Post 157 in East Grand Forks, having been a Past Post Commander, a member of the East Grand Forks Eagles, and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was also an avid bowler and hunter.
Don is survived by his children, Carol Sonnenberg of East Grand Forks, Richard Iverson of New Rockford, and Jeannie Strande of Grand Forks; stepson, Craig McEnelly; and stepdaughter, Deanne Gifford; son-in-law, Bill Sauerwein; siblings, Phyllis Wedin, Jack (Carol) Iverson, Bob (Avis) Iverson, Gary Iverson and special friend Renae all of Grand Forks, Rodney (Anita) Iverson of Blaine, MN, Peggy (Bob) Gunderson of Fisher, MN, and Bruce (Cyndi) Iverson of Lake Havasu, AZ; grandchildren, Sheila, Ryan, Donald, Darren, Daniel, Mary Jo, Mark, Jeremy, Jennifer, Joni, Jason, Jessica, Lee, Lisa, Robert, Abbey, Ben, Sarah, Michael, and Cammy; and numerous great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice; daughters, Linda Hoverson and Vicky Sauerwein; brothers, Bill (Kathy) and Jim Iverson; brother-in-law, Bob Wedin; grandson, Joshua Iverson; granddaughter, Suzanne Hoverson; and an infant grandson.
Public visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. The funeral service will be private. Public graveside service and military honors will be 3:00 PM Friday, November 13, 2020 at Memorial Park South Cemetery, Grand Forks. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post # 157, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3817, and the North Dakota Army National Guard.
