Donald “Don” Benson, 92, Arvilla, died Monday, June 29, 2020 in Valley Senior Living on 42, Grand Forks, ND.
Don was born October 3, 1927, the son of Fred and Esther (Olson) Benson. He grew up and attended school in a one room school in rural Mekinock, ND. He graduated from Central High School in Grand Forks. Don was a lifelong member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Honeyford, ND, where he was baptized, attended Sunday School, was confirmed, and married.
On October 17, 1948, Don married the love of his life Lila Moen. They made their home on the farm where they raised their 4 children: Mark, Judy, Karen, and Dale. They were married for almost 70 years. Lila passed in August of 2018.
Don was a friendly, outgoing man who loved to visit with people, share jokes, and stories. He was the best dad and grandfather ever. He was very proud of his Swedish heritage.
Don is survived by his children: Mark (Pat), Karen (Jon), Dale (Sherri); 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, sister Verona, and many nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lila, and daughter Judy.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2020 from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by a private memorial service at Amundson Funeral Home.
The graveside service will be held Thursday, July 2, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Honeyford. Friends, family, and neighbors are all welcome.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to an organization of your choice.
The family would like to thank the staff in the Oakcrest neighborhood of Valley Senior Living on 42nd and Altru Hospice for their friendship and compassion.
