Dennis L. Gunderson, a cherished member of the Grand Forks community, passed away peacefully at his home on February 9, 2025, at the age of 85.
Born on November 14, 1939, in Grand Forks, ND, to Gust and Hilda (Gustafson) Gunderson. .Dennis's educational journey included attending school through the eighth grade in Buxton, ND. Following his education, he demonstrated his commitment to serving others by enlisting in the Army National Guard on August 14, 1956. He proudly served in the Artillery, achieving the rank of Specialist 3rd Class (E4), and was honorably discharged on February 1, 1959.
Dennis's career began at the University of North Dakota in 1964, where he became widely known as the "Zamboni Man." His skillful operation and meticulous maintenance of the Zamboni played a vital role in ensuring smooth ice for countless games. Additionally, he tirelessly maintained the football field and basketball courts. Dennis retired in 2009, concluding a fulfilling tenure as Athletic Maintenance Director, leaving behind a legacy of diligence and pride in his work.
A man who valued family above all, Dennis met Lorna Lappegaard in Minneapolis, MN, and the two were united in marriage on August 31, 1963, in Red Lake Falls, MN. Together they raised four children: Denise, Darla, Leah and Thomas. The bonds of family were central to Dennis's life, and he cherished the time spent with them.
Outside of work and service, Dennis enjoyed various hobbies and interests, including bowling, playing pinochle, and taking occasional trips to the casino. He also took great pride in maintaining his immaculate yard.
Dennis is survived by his beloved wife, Lorna Gunderson, children: Denise (Troy) Jacobs, Darla Gunderson, Leah Gunderson, and Thomas Gunderson; grandchildren: Tyler, Matthew, Nathan, Ryley and Megan; one great grandchild, Gordon; four brothers in law; nine sisters-in-laws; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Gust and Hilda Gunderson, and six brothers and four sisters; one grandchild, Derrick Jacobs, one brother-in-law; three sister-in-laws; two nieces and one nephew.

A Memorial Service held at Amundson Funeral Home on February 14, 2025, at 1:00 PM. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Memorial Park North Cemetery in the spring.
