Debbie Lynn Thompson

July 14, 1965 — December 27, 2018

My name is Debbie Thompson. At the age of 53, my life’s journey came to an end on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.

I was born in Grand Forks, ND on July 14, 1965 to Ronald and Beverly (Sannes) Gravelle. My parents did all they could to give me the world.  I never went a day without feeling unconditional love from them.  I was daddy’s little girl and “sunshine”.  He shared his love of music with me, and I loved listening to him sing and play guitar. My mother was a role model for all that is good, teaching me about God’s love from the moment I was born.  Ours was a blended family of yours, mine and ours.  Growing up, my extended siblings and I shared small pieces of our lives together. My brother, Pat Miller and I grew up together, loved each other and shared a mother, who was truly an angel among us.

On a chance encounter, I met the love of my life, Mike Thompson.  Five years after we went on our first date, he finally succumbed to my charm and relentless pursuit. We were married on September 16, 1989.  Life threw us many ups and downs, but we survived each challenge due to his strength and character, with this battle being our last together. He is my true champion.  I can’t thank him enough for standing by me to the end.  We were blessed with two amazing kids, Tyler and Hailey. God gave me you. A part of me will remain with them all the days of their lives. They are caring and loving people, and I am so proud of them.

In 1983, I graduated from the University of North Dakota in Social Work. I owe a debt of gratitude to my mother, who worked her fingers to the bone doing extra jobs, to ensure I had an education and a bright future.  As a result of my education, I was fortunate to have a career at the YMCA. The YMCA was a part of my life at an early age, but I never imagined how big of a role it would play in my future.  Because of generous donors in our community, as a young child I was able to receive a scholarship to the Y.  As a result, I was able to become a member and participate in programs with my friends.  When I had an opportunity to select a community organization to complete my volunteer hours for a college course, I didn’t hesitate to choose the Y, so I could have an opportunity to give back.  Upon completing my volunteer time, I was hired to work in the youth department under my mentor and friend, Peg Granlund.  After graduation, I was promoted to Child Care Director. In 2000, I stepped into the role of CEO.  They say you will never work a day in your life, if you love what you do. I truly loved the mission of the Y and being a part of an organization that helped to make our community a better place.  I had the pleasure of meeting and working alongside some amazing people during my time at the Y, and they were all a part of my extended family.  Always remember, “it always works out”.

I am survived by my husband; my children, Tyler (Mackenzie) Thompson and Hailey Thompson; brother, Pat Miller, Reynolds, ND; half-Siblings; father-in-law, Lowell Thompson; sister-in-laws, LuAnn Burris and Denise (John) Horpedahl; brother-in-law Jody (Machell) Thompson, all of Grand Forks, ND.  In addition to nieces, nephews, and their children, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.  I love you with all my heart.

I was preceded in death by my loving father, mother and amazing mother-in-law, Donna Thompson, along with grandparents, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Like the song, “I wish for one last dance…to a song that would never end”. However, I am grateful I was able to survive cancer for the past 17 years so I could live the experiences and make the memories I did with my husband, children, family and friends.  For now, I say farewell, until we meet again.

If you wish to honor my memory, please continue to share your love and support to my family, or consider a donation to the YMCA Partner of Youth Scholarship Program.

Per my request, there will be no services.
