David Lee Oliver October 24, 1946 – January 4, 2021

David Lee Oliver, 74, passed away Monday, January 4, 2021, in his home in Grand Forks. Services of military honor burial will be conducted at the Fargo National Cemetery on Monday, February 1, 2021 at 1:00 PM.

David was born in Frankfort, Kentucky, the son of Anna (Oldham) Oliver and Robert H. Oliver, Jr. He moved around often in his youth, as his farther was in the Navy. In 1966, David enlisted in the Army, serving for eight years. During his time in the military, he completed three tours of duty in Southeast Asia, serving in both Vietnam and Thailand, and was decorated with four Bronze Stars for Valor during the war. He achieved the rank of Staff Sargent before his discharge in 1974.

After his time in the Army, David went to the University of Michigan where he completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. David was a passionate and gifted artist, and turned right around from his degree to working as a commercial graphic artist for the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. He spent the next 32 years, creating beauty and providing artistic support to the faculty and students before his retirement in 2010.

After retirement, David moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota to be near friends. He continued to engage his passion for the arts, creating his own works as well as supporting the local arts community. He regularly attended events at the North Dakota Museum of Art, Muddy Waters Clay Center, the Grand Cities Art Fest, and various other civic and arts celebrations.

Dave was proceeded in death by his parents, Anna and Robert. He is survived by his friends in the area as well as many who served with him in the Vietnam War. This amazing man will truly be missed.
