David Loiland

David Loiland, 76, Thompson, North Dakota, passed away from Parkinson’s disease at his home in Phoenix, AZ on August 1, 2024, surrounded by his family.

David was born to Julian and Geneva Loiland on February 18th, 1948. After attending school in Thompson, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music education from UND and a master’s degree from the University of North Texas. While in college, he met and married Cynthia Flaten from Park River, ND, on May 13th, 1972.

David's exceptional trumpet skills led him to perform in a wide range of settings, including the Grand Forks Symphony, the Clyde Beatty Circus, the North Texas Jazz band and various local dance bands, such as Olaf Roisum and Chuck Gust.

Returning to his family roots, David and Cynthia became the fourth generation on the pioneer homestead and welcomed sons Eric and Scott. David enjoyed serving on the Walle Township Board and the Sugar Beet Growers Association. An avid photographer, David cherished capturing the beauty of the moment. Mesmerizing midnight views of the Northern Lights and Milky Way to the occasional Nebula thrilled him.

David is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Steven and Dean. He is survived by his wife, sons Eric (Brooke) with children Ashton and Audrey in Cave Creek, AZ, and Scott (Kitty) in Grand Forks, ND; Brother Randy (Bernadette) in Bel Air, MD; sister-in-law Chris Loiland in Grand Forks, ND.

 Funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2024, in East Walle Lutheran Church, Rural Thompson. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Amundson Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the start of the service at the church. Interment will be in East Walle Church Cemetery.
