David Lewis Berg, 77, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 31st, 2020.
Throughout his life, David developed a wide array of unique interests and talents that he will always be remembered for.
Born November 11, 1942, in Lakota, North Dakota to Lewis Berg and Clarice Berg (Styve), David was the eldest child, with two sisters, Gale (Merlin) Stahl and Teresa (Mike) Bonner. He grew up working on his grandparent’s farm where he developed a love for the land. After graduating from McVille High School, he earned a teaching degree from Mayville State University and began his career at the East Grand Forks Junior High School, teaching mathematics and geography and coaching basketball.
David was ahead of the curve in computer technology, aiming to learn everything he could at the earliest stages of computer development. He spearheaded the use of computer systems in the East Grand Forks public school district and the former Area Vocational Technical Institute.
David’s entrepreneurial mindset and farming background then led him into crop/hail insurance, and playing “name that crop” with his grandchildren on car trips in North Dakota.
David poured himself into many adventures. He loved country music and he and his wife could cut a rug with a country two-step. He was an avid hunter, a bird watcher, a North Dakota State Champion trap shooter, and a cattle rancher.
A 100% Norwegian, he was proud of his heritage and his ties to this geographical area which he often referred to as “God’s country.”
For most of life, David was not known for his domestic skills, but he made a mean Bloody Mary and a perfect “extra rare” prime rib, and when his wife Diane needed care, he stepped into that role with complete devotion. Depending on how you knew him, you might say he loved many things…his work, his hobbies, our nation, good brandy, Willie Nelson songs and many lifelong friends. But all of these things shadowed in comparison to the number one love of his life, his wife Diane. And he would unashamedly tell you she was the best thing that ever happened to him.
David is survived by four children, Stacy Becker (Steve), Clarkston, WA, Kim Boggs, Sedalia, MO, Claire Dezotell (Sam Landry), Juno Beach, FL, and Carl Dezotell (Tee), McVille, ND, and five grandchildren, Dana Immertreu, Kaley Boggs, Eric Boggs, Nicholas Becker, and Kelly Peters.
