Daryell J. Ferguson, 82, passed away on Friday, December 24, 2021 at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND.

Daryell was born in Manistique, Michigan on August 10, 1939, to Floyd and Carmen Ferguson. He had lived in Texas, Nevada, Japan, and Maine, when his family was with the Air Force. He graduated from high school in Presque Isle, Maine, in 1958. After school, he joined the Air Force. He came to Grand Forks on valentine’s Day in 1959. Daryell came to the first Methodist Church downtown after meeting Rev. Butz, when he was serving as Chaplain on the base. He was brought up Lutheran, where his mother was a Sunday School Teacher.

Daryell met Mary Gillies at a party on the air base. They were married on June 17, 1961 by Rev. Paul in the Crystal Methodist Church. They have lived in Grand Forks ever since.

Daryell and Mary joined Wesley on February 13, 1966. Their children and grandsons were all baptized and confirmed at Wesley. Both James and Diane were also married at Wesley.

After leaving the Air Force, Daryell got a job at Coast to Coast hardware store where he worked for 15 years. After that, he worked for the GF public school system until the flood of 1997, then became the custodian here at Wesley for a few years until he retired.

Daryell had been very active within the church. He served on various committees, such as Education, Missions, Outreach, Trustees, and Memorials. He loved to go fishing in Minaki, Ontario with the men and boys group that went up to Rev. Neumann’s cabin. He had worked with the star givers, helped serve meals at the Mission and ushered.

Through the church he became involved in Boy Scouting and was the Scoutmaster of Wesley’s Troop 4 for 20 years. During that time, 17 boys earned their Eagle Scout award. He sent 4 scouts to the National Jamboree and 2 went to the World Jamboree. During various times of the year, he also took the troop to various local campouts. Daryell had received the Silver Beaver Award for scouting adults. He had received the Methodist Cross and Flame award for service to children and youth.

He had received a Special Mission recognition pin from the Wesley United Methodist Women for service to the church in 2004.

During his free time, he liked to work in the garage making items out of wood. Some things for the church and also family and friends.

Daryell had done volunteer work for ARC, meals on wheels, RRVCA, and donated blood. According to Daryell, “church means feeling God’s presence and friendship.”

Daryell is survived by his wife Mary, son, James (Rachel) and a daughter Diane: grandsons, Kajon and Jaedon: and 3 great-grandchildren, Kymbirley, Jordyn, and Lyle. And1 brother Delwyn.

Daryell is preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Carmen, brother Michael, and sister Juanita.

The funeral service will be on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Wesley United Methodist with visitation from 12-1pm prior to funeral service.
Interment: Memorial Park South in Grand Forks, ND.
